How to Prepare for Your Family Photos

Family photos are important. They can also be stressful! Your family photographer wants you to enjoy the entire experience as much as possible. Here are five ways you can prepare for your family photos to make sure they are as low-stress and fun as possible!

PLAN AND TRY ON YOUR OUTFITS A WEEK IN ADVANCE.

Don’t wait ‘til the last day, trust me! You want to wake up feeling relaxed and prepared, so plan these details out early. Your photographer is likely happy to have you text them photos of your wardrobe if you’re having a hard time deciding. And don’t forget to try things on too! Nothing is worse than realizing something doesn’t fit the day of your session.

TALK TO YOUR KIDS USING LAID-BACK TERMS

Tell them you will be “hanging out with our friend Sadie on Saturday!” or “going to the mountains to play!” and keep things fun, lighthearted, and casual. Using these terms are especially helpful if you have members of your family who are shy.

MAKE SURE EVERYONE IS WELL RESTED + HAS HAD A GOOD MEAL.

Eliminate “hanger” and “the grumps” by making sure everyone is well rested and has had a good meal. Adjust nap time if needed–I promise it’s worth it.

PACK SNACKS (AKA BRIBES)

Pack a bag with snacks that are easy to eat and won’t stain clothes. This can help to curb any sudden burst of hunger or incentivize kids (or your husband) to smile for just that one photo. This also helps keep your kids entertained if they are waiting their turn for their individual picture.

COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER

If there is that one shot you are dying to have or something you or someone else in your family is a bit self conscious of, let your photographer know. We want to make sure you love your photos and feel as beautiful as you already are. Be sure to communicate this with your family photographer.

Following these few tips will help you enjoy your session and in turn love your photos even more. Have questions about your family photo session? Let’s chat!
