What You Need to Know About Family Photos at the White Rocks
The White Rocks in Snow Canyon State Park are beautiful and unique to the area. Their beauty attracts many locals and families who want to have their family photos taken there. There are a few things you should know before you go!
If you’re new here, hi! I’m Sadie. Your St. George photo location expert, styling assistant, and family photographer (but, like the fun kind). I am here to do everything in my power to make this the least stressful, most comfortable, and most fun photo experience you’ve had.
Since starting my business in 2019, I have photographed over 300 families in Colorado and Oregon. I am so excited to now serve families in St. George, Utah and the surrounding areas–the place that I grew up and now call my family’s home. I can’t wait to meet you and your family! You can learn more about me and my family photography business here.
Do I need to have a permit to have photos taken in Snow Canyon State Park?
Yes! If you are having photos taken anywhere in Snow Canyon State Park, your photographer will need to obtain a permit. You can learn more about that here. The permit system allows the park to be maintained while also protecting its beauty. If you are a photographer and will be using the portraits you take at Snow Canyon for any sort of marketing or promotional purposes and/or if you are receiving any sort of compensation for taking photos you must get a permit.
You will also need to pay the entrance fee to have your photos taken in Snow Canyon.
How do you get to the White Rocks in Snow Canyon?
The White Rocks Amphitheater trail head is located right up the road from the main entrance to Snow Canyon. The trail is just under 1 mile and leads you to the iconic white rocks with stunning views and colors from just about every direction. You can type “White Rocks Trail” into your apple maps to get directions to the trailhead as well.
What should your family wear for photos at White Rocks in Snow Canyon?
This is without fail, one of the most common questions I get! You can read an entire blog post about how to select colors for your photos here. Generally speaking though, I recommend neutral colors. Now, I’m not talking just all beige; think more of earth tones. Colors that you would see in nature. Light blue instead of a bright blue, a olive green rather than a vibrant green, etc. These types of colors always photograph well. You can also download my FREE what to wear guide here as well.
What is the best time of day for family photos?
The best time for any photos, is “golden hour” this is about 1.5 hours before sunset, and with the positioning of the sun and the rocks can change throughout the year. If you have young kids and are worried about bedtime, I’d recommend booking your family photos in the early spring or late fall. Golden hour is usually around 5-6 this time of year. If you are wanting to do photos in the summer, consider adjusting your schedule the day of your photos so your kids are still happy and well rested, even with photos starting closer to 6:30 and going until 7:30 p.m.
