What to Know About Photos at Chuckwalla
Chuckwalla — tucked into the stunning red rock landscape of Snow Canyon State Park — is one of my favorite spots near St. George for family photos. The dramatic sandstone, sandy trail surfaces, and natural textures create a timeless, adventurous backdrop that looks incredible on camera.
Whether you’re doing candid moments, walking-shots on the trail, or portraits with the sandstone cliffs in the background, Chuckwalla is a great choice any time of year — as long as you plan around the weather and lighting.
If you’re new here, hi! I’m Sadie. Your St. George photographer, photo location expert, and styling assistant. I am here to do everything in my power to make this the least stressful, most comfortable, and most fun photo experience you’ve had.
Since starting my business in 2019, I have photographed over 300 families in Colorado and Oregon. I am so excited to now serve families in St. George, Utah and the surrounding areas–the place that I grew up and now call my family’s home. I can’t wait to meet you and your family! You can learn more about me and my family photography business here.
Do I Need a Permit for Photos at Chuckwalla?
If you’re planning personal family photos in St. George(not paying someone), you do not need a permit — just follow the park’s regular day-use rules. Keep in mind that Snow Canyon State Park has a day-use fee for vehicles, and photographers doing professional shoots (e.g., paying clients) are required to schedule and obtain a photography pass ahead of time. Permits are $45 per session.
Best Time of Day for Family Photos
Just like any red rock location, golden hour — about 1.5 hours before sunset — is ideal. That warm, glowing light brings out the rich reds and oranges in the sandstone and casts soft, flattering shadows on faces. Early morning just after sunrise can also be beautiful and a bit cooler in the summer months.
Tips depending on season:
- Spring & Fall: Perfect temps and gorgeous light mid-week even in the afternoon.
- Summer: Plan earlier or stick to golden hour to avoid harsh midday sun and heat — and bring plenty of water
What Should Your Family Wear for Photos at Chuckwalla?
For a desert red rock backdrop like Chuckwalla, earthy tones and neutrals photograph beautifully. Think:
- Warm neutrals: tan, beige, rust, terracotta, soft browns
- Muted blues and greens: olive, sage, slate
- Patterns: subtle (avoid huge, bright logos/prints)
These tones complement the canyon’s red and orange hues without clashing or distracting from your faces. Avoid super-bright neons — they tend to bounce color onto skin in photos.
Photography Tips for Chuckwalla
- Bring water and sun protection — full shade is limited along the trail.
- Watch the ground & path — the trail can be sandy or rocky, so bring comfortable shoes if you plan to walk for family portraits.
- Explore the trail — Chuckwalla connects to Turtle Wall, Paradise Rim, and Halfway Wash, offering variety if you want multiple looks in one session.
- Keep it fun — walking shots, candid laughs on the trail, and interaction with the landscape help create natural, meaningful photos.
