A 60th Birthday Family Gathering and Extended Family Photos at Sand Hollow | St. George, Utah

family celebrating mom's 60th birthday party extended family photos

There is something extra special about extended family sessions, and this one was such a beautiful reminder of why I love them so much.

This family gathered in St. George to celebrate their mom’s 60th birthday, and instead of jumping straight into posed photos, we started the evening in a way that felt true to them. Cake, ice cream, kids running around, and everyone simply being together. It was relaxed, meaningful, and honestly the perfect way to begin.

As a St. George extended family photographer, I always encourage families to think beyond just the “everyone look at the camera and smile” photo. Those are important and we absolutely capture them, but the real magic often happens in the in-between moments.

After spending time together at their rental, we headed over to Sand Hollow for the second half of their session. The light, the scenery, and the open space made it the perfect setting to bring everything together.

We captured the traditional groupings, full family, individual families, grandparents with grandkids, all the combinations that matter. But we also made space for movement, connection, and interaction. Kids playing in the sand, siblings laughing together, parents soaking in time with their little ones.

Those are the moments that turn into the images families come back to again and again.

If you’re looking for fun and unique extended family photos, it doesn’t have to mean anything complicated. Sometimes it simply means creating space for your family to be themselves. Letting the kids be a little wild, encouraging laughter, and focusing on connection instead of perfection.

As a St. George family photographer, my goal is always to give you both. The timeless images where everyone is looking and smiling, and the natural, candid moments that reflect what your family actually feels like in this season.

This session was the perfect blend of both. A meaningful celebration, beautiful scenery at Sand Hollow, and a whole lot of love woven into every moment.

If you’re planning an extended family session in St. George, I would love to help you create something that feels just as special.
