Family Photos at Kirkland Fields in St. George, Utah

What to know about photos at Kirkland Fields

Kirkland Fields is a favorite family photo spot in St. George, this is a beautiful spot reserved just for photographers in the area to use–and I might add the only green spot in southern Utah for photos. There are a few things you should know before you go!

If you’re new here, hi! I’m Sadie. Your St. George photographer, photo location expert, and styling assistant. I am here to do everything in my power to make this the least stressful, most comfortable, and most fun photo experience you’ve had.

Since starting my business in 2019, I have photographed over 300 families in Colorado and Oregon. I am so excited to now serve families in St. George, Utah and the surrounding areas–the place that I grew up and now call my family’s home. I can’t wait to meet you and your family! Do I need to have a permit for photos at Kirkland Fields?

This beautiful spot is reserved just for professional photographers in the area to use for photos (how awesome is that!?) No permit is required. The owners do have their venmo posted and it’s encouraged that photographers do pay the owners whatever they see fit.

What is the best time of day for family photos?

The best time for any photos, is “golden hour” this is about 1.5 hours before sunset, and with the positioning of the sun and the rocks can change throughout the year. If you have young kids and are worried about bedtime, I’d recommend booking your family photos in the early spring or late fall. Golden hour is usually around 5-6 this time of year. If you are wanting to do photos in the summer, consider adjusting your schedule the day of your photos so your kids are still happy and well rested, even with photos starting closer to 6:30 and going until 7:30 p.m.

One of my favorite times of year to do photos at Kirkland Fields is in the spiring! The way the sun sets and filters through the trees is stunning. This is also a great time of year because the sun is setting later, but not as late as it does in the summer making it perfect for young families with little kids.

This is also a very popular spot in the fall as well since it has the changing leaves.

What should your family wear for photos at Kirkland Fields?

This is without fail, one of the most common questions I get! You can read an entire blog post about how to select colors for your photos here. Generally speaking though, I recommend neutral colors. Now, I’m not talking just all beige; think more of earth tones. Colors that you would see in nature. Light blue instead of a bright blue, a olive green rather than a vibrant green, etc. These types of colors always photograph well. You can also download my FREE what to wear guide here as well.
